Looking Forward


Next Saturday, we are celebrating my sister Lisa's milestone birthday. She's younger than me, so I won't say which birthday that is, until we get to know each other better. Lisa is known to all as "The President of Animal House," so of course, we're having a toga party. "Ok," you might think, "I've heard that before." But keep in mind that we're adults, blessed with parents and a big extended family of all ages, and so, place in your mind's eye, a gathering of twenty-somethings to eighty-somethings in Greek garb, laurels and all, pouring mead from a keg of Corona (Does Corona come in kegs? I'm just guessing on the brand.) I'm looking for a Vuitton print for my toga. What do you wear under one of those things?

Trying to Decide

Do I push the send button to buy two tickets to New York so that Ronald and I can attend the Ad Age Hispanic Creative Awards Gala this Friday evening? We don't yet know if we have tickets to the event, so the executive decision here is whether to go regardless or wait until we're sure in order to book. But what if the flights sell out? I luv JetBlue and feel like they love me back. Mijita Evelyn has graciously invited us to stay at her home in Park Slope, and it's been many months since we've seen each other. Streaming Playlist of the Women of Jazz

Today was a mournful day in world history, where a would-be despot and the genuine article came together as like-minded individuals, their nations notwithstanding. I sat agape as American press were barred from televising interviews, instead, disseminating prepared statements. I feel very blue, and yet... ...I feel like I've uncovered a great treasure through no effort of my own. While browsing through Flipboard , I came upon an article in Open Culture , Women of Jazz Stream a Playlist of 91 Recordings by Great Female Jazz Musicians . Yes, a playlist of 91 recordings by great female jazz musicians!  Just as an idea of the beauty of this trove, the playlist features the great, Eartha Kitt performing "Cést si bon". What about the Freedom Concert?

I first learned about the Freedom Concert concept on the Facebook page of advertising guru Valerie Graves, whose newly published memoir, " Pressure Makes Diamonds " has nearly sold out on Amazon (I ordered my copy from its publisher, Akashic Books).  Ms. Graves, in turn, mentioned that she learned it from another person. A day or two later, Berkeley and formerly Harvard professor as well as political commentator  Robert Reich , who s erved in the administrations of Presidents Gerald Ford and Jimmy Carter, and was Secretary of Labor under President Clinton,  blew the idea up on Facebook.
